PrincipalDear Parents:

It is with great pride and excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the newly appointed Principal of Sherard Pre-K - 6t Elementary School, “Home of the Mighty Dragons.”  I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition that has produced so many outstanding students.

During the past few weeks, I have had many conversations with parents, teachers and students.  From these interactions, it is clear that there is a mutually respectful partnership between all stakeholders to provide the best possible academic experience for our students.  I look forward to fostering these relationships and working with teachers and staff to provide a world-class educational experience for each child.

I have been dedicated to the field of education for more than nineteen years with a concentration in early literacy development.  My most recent administrative experience has been shaped by two years as an Assistant Principal, eight years as a Special Education Director/District Test Coordinator and two years as an Elementary Principal.  I am elated to bring my skills as an educational leader to Sherard Elementary and to work with you as a partner in education to ensure your child’s success.

Along with teachers and staff, I will work hard to continue the legacy of success established at Sherard Elementary by building strong relationships with parents, students, and community partners.  We will focus on Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards, character education initiatives, use of data to inform instruction, consistent implementation of newly adopted direct instruction strategies, using technology to personalize learning , and providing exciting, and challenging enrichment opportunities for all students.

All of us at Sherard Elementary are eager and excited to begin what promises to be a great year.  We look forward to your support as we continue on this journey of providing academic experiences for our students that are rigorous, and relevant.  As your principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors-teachers, students and parents-are excited about being here!  This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun and nurturing environment.  My door is always open and I welcome your input.  Please feel free to stop in, call or email me to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this year be the best year ever!

Sincerely,

Mechelle Martin, Principal
